Beyond the Wall
Beyond the Wall explores the virtual augmentation of physical space through the superimposition of simulated perspectives in the form of interactive mapped video projections. As a background, a wall located in the foyer of a classical building was selected for its characteristic elements such as a central window and decorative cornices. The wall was light-painted with 3 different animation sequences that sculpted virtual spaces beyond the physical surface of existing wall. The animations were triggered by the entry of visitors into the foyer and variations between the different sequences were determined by the position of the visitor. This was achieved using a combination of media tools including a video projector, a video camera, and a mapping software. The software mapped the visual position of the visitor captured by the video camera and translated it to a corresponding set of instructions that dictated which animation sequence would be played.
